Divorce Lawyer – How To Choose the Best Divorce Lawyer
If you are looking for a divorce lawyer, you probably have questions about how to find a good one and what to expect from the whole divorce process.
Finding the right lawyer is much like the hunt for any other specialized professional. You want to locate one with excellent credentials, sufficient experience, and fees and prices that are reasonable and within your own budget. So a good place for anyone to start is by talking to friends and colleagues. Among them there are likely some people who have used an Alabama divorce attorney and got good results. If they were satisfied with their lawyer, then there is every possibility that you will find the attorney ideal for your situation.
Keep in mind that while each state has its own guidelines and legislation regarding divorce, but most of the laws stipulate that before the divorce is granted – or even before you can file for a divorce in the first place – you must have lived in that state for at least six months. Maybe you only moved here within the past year – and perhaps your spouse does not live in the same. But as long as you have been here at least six months you can still file for divorce, even if your spouse is not living in Alabama.
Serving papers on a spouse who lives out of state may be a little more difficult to do, but your divorce attorney will know ways to still get it done. In fact, a qualified Alabama divorce attorney will even be able to help you file for divorce in situations where you do not even know the current mailing address for your spouse. Sometimes they can post legal notices in newspapers, for example, in lieu of sending divorce papers directly to a spouse.
Also be aware that not even a great divorce lawyer can speed along some divorces, because divorce can be a complicated process that involves negotiations, court dates, and scheduled filings of legal documents. By law it will take at least 30 days to get divorced most states, for example, but in reality the process typically takes longer than that. It might take a couple of months, and if there are many issues to be worked out between you and your spouse regarding such things as child custody arrangements, those may add to the time it takes to actually finalize everything. But in the meantime, if you have a good divorce lawyer, the process will be pushed along so that there are no unnecessary delays.
